In the 19th Century having a photograph taken was a lengthy process. Frustrated by the difficulties of getting children to sit still long enough to snap a proper photo , photographers in the 1800’s conceived of a technique called “The Hidden Mother”. Draping a sheet over the mothers head in an attempt to camouflage her as a part of the furniture to better emphasize the child, the mother was then able to hold her infant and keep them still long enough for the camera to get an exposure. Vintage photographs already have a eerie feel to them, but these images of moms as cloaked phantoms take the creep factor to the next level.

Reflections (in English)

I have to do a portfolio for my English 250 class and I actually think that this last project has a good premise, so I’m going to apply it to my English 225 class, as it is the class that I actually think I’ve learned things.

First of all, it really made me appreciate both the anthology and marginalia. I really regretted renting and not buying the required textbook for the class because this is the first class I’ve ever taken where the benefits of writing and highlighting in the book were well worth it. Indeed, towards the end I found myself, in pencil, writing in my own thoughts, or things I liked from class discussion.

Two, I think that this has truly been my first writing class. I love it because writing in this class has allowed me to break the mold of the standard writing that I’ve grown up using. I will probably write more on this issue later because I think I need to write down in length how I’ve learned to write so I don’t forget, and I just don’t think I have time to do it now (as I’m writing a research paper and I only came on here because I wanted to chart my progress in that!). Oh I guess I will start writing those here. I could always come back and edit.

My Research paper strategies:

I was given the assignment to chose a text we’ve read over the course of our English 225 British Lit. up to 1800 survey class. Within that text we were to find a narrow topic that could be researched for a 8-12 page paper, and include at least 7 varied sources.

Picking a topic was daunting. I think most people will complain when limited by what they can write about, but I’ve first hand discovered it is really hard to decide what to focus a major paper on by yourself. So step #1 I thank my professor for.

#1: Before choosing a research paper topic, DO RESEARCH. Find out what has been researched in a text you like and think you might want to hone in on. This is a great way to discover things about your text that interest you and make you want to delve further into, or simply let you know what you’ll be able to find sources on. (I had first wanted to do something having to do with John Donne, and it failed because I couldn’t find anything that apply to the scope of the class. Most people like to write about how the metaphysical poets fell into disfavor until C.S. Lewis stamped his approval.)

In the end, I went with The Tragical History of Dr. Faustus by Christopher Marlowe, because it had a lot of things going on in it at once, and I was able to find a topic I was interested in: how he represented a failed humanist, abused reason, and betrayed Renaissance ideals.

#2: Even if it is not assigned, I recommend first completing an ANNOTATED BIBLIOGRAPHY: One) Because it requires you find all your sources before you dive into the paper and face wasting time because you can’t find what you need. Two) Because once you’re writing the paper you have notes on where to find what you need. Three) If you’re still not sure how you want to organize your paper, it could help you begin to lump sources together that would work to support similar points of argument.
